This is in reply to your letter of 19 September 1983 in regard to your
account number 904 relating to the charges accrued for breakfasts in your
coffee house restaurant on the morning of 8/20/83, for myself and my two
daughters, Mrs. Donna Hussain and Mrs. Margaret Finch. As you will note
from your records, the three of us were a part of the Raymond and Whitcomb
group for whom breakfasts were to be provided at Raymond and Whitcomb' expense.
The misunderstanding arose, I am sure, because you chose to keep separate
accounts for the three of us. On the morning in question, I asked the
cashier if all of us ahould sign the bill and was told that this
would not be necessary. You will, however, note that I did list the two
room numbers on the bill.
By copy of this letter, I am advising Ms. Laboda at Raymond and Whitcomb
of this situation.

\noindent {Dear Don:}
Thank you for your generous check to cover my expenses to the IJCAI.
A minor problem that I almost hesitate to bother you with, but perhaps you
should know about it.
I was given the enclosed check at the conference as a refund. Thinking
that it would be easier to cash while still in Germany, I stopped in at
the Dresdner Bank in Karlsruhe and was told that it could only be cashed
in the U.S.. The check has now been returned as unclearable through normal
channels. My bank's only sugestion was that it be mailed to a collection
agency in Germany, for which there would be a $\$$25 fee. Having failed
once to get it cashed in Germany, I thought that this would be fruitless,
so I asked to have the check returned.
Perhaps you can resolve the matter.
I am somewhat at loss as to what I should submit for my expenses in
connection with the IJCAI meeting since I combined the trip to Karlsruhe
with a vacation trip. My air ticket covered a return flight from Lisbon,
which, I believe, did not increase the cost, but I stopped
overnight in both New York and London on the way over (I never fly at
night), and this ran up the price. The only fair thing seems to be to
charge the minimum round trip fare to Frankfurt without stopovers. Perhaps
you know what this is.
My living expenses in Karlsruhe are equally difficuly to determine since
my two daughters were with me and we ate in rather more
expensive places than I might have done if alone. So any nominal per
diem amount will be satisfactory. My room for four nights is the one
thing that I can separate and it was $\$$186.40.
I will attach the receipts that I saved but they may not be of much use.
Other possible legitimate costs were the limousine service to and from the
S.F. airport, and two rail trips between Frankfurt and Karlsruhe, at
$\$$11.55 each plus the subway fair in Frankfurt.
Any figure that you feel is reasonable will be satisfactory to me.
I certainly enjoyed my visit to Karlsruhe and the honor and the honorarium
are appreciated.
This note is to suggest one possible solution
to the difficult problem of choosing a suitable location for the proposed
swimming pool and jucuzzi.
The land just across our perimeter road from the Lodge would seem to be
nearly ideal, being close enough to the Lodge and Health Center to benefit
those of our residents who may not be quite as mobile as others, and yet
remove from other residential quarters so as not to disturb those
residents who are not interested in such facilities. That portion of the
land more or less opposite the Lodge is also somewhat farther from Portola
Road than is another possible site, this being the area near the croquet
court. The objections leveled against the alternate site near Bldg. 17
certainly does not apply to this location.
The proposed land does not now belong to us, but
it might be available for purchase or in trade for some of our land
beyond our water tank, land that is of little or no use to us but that
would be ideal for residential use.
The current plan for
the development of the adjoining property does not call for any immediate
use of the strip in question, largely because of objections raised by
Portola Valley but also because this particular portion is not
very well suited for the cluster plan of development that was to characterize
the entire development.
The parcel would, however, be ideal for a swimming pool and jacuzzi, for
much needed additional parking, and for possible future additions to our
residential and recreational
facilities. This is, of course, the only direction in which
we could expand.
The parcel in question is rather larger than it now appears since Portola
Valley has insisted that the main access road be moved well away from
the bend in Portola Road. We could consider acquiring the land all the way
to the access road although the developer might wish to retain a portion as a
parkway along this road, and there would still be enough land
for our intended use. We would want to leave a portion of the land
unused as a buffer along Portola Road.
This is only a suggestion but I thought that it should be brought to your
attention.

{\noindent Dear Miss Laboda:}
A check for $\$$8544 is enclosed,
in payment for invoices 7793 and 7825
covering to the reservations for cabin A-10, single without air cost and
cabin V-1 double also without air cost, for myself and my two daughters,
Mrs. Donna E. Hussain and Mrs. Margaret L. Finch.
I am returning the three Manifest information cards in a rather incomplete
form. I do not have Margaret's current address and I have been unable to
reach Donna by phone. I do have their birth information and I am
reasonably sure that they both have valid passports.
As for our independent travel plans, Margaret is already in Europe,
Donna and I will be leaving our homes during the first week in
August and will travel separately to Europe. The three of us
will arrive in
London a few days before August 19th and we will join the group
at the Hotel Inter-Continental on that date. Donna and I are both
holding independently reserved space on the same flight from Lisbon
that you have scheduled for the main group, while Margaret will be
staying in Europe and will make her own travel arrangements at a later
date.
It would be nice if I could receive the final documents from you before I
leave for Europe. If this is not possible, then the only firm address
that I can supply at this time is c/o Parkhotel, D-7500 Karlsruhe 1, WEST
GERMANY, where I will be arriving on August 8th and leaving on August
12th.

{\noindent Dear Ms. Godard:}
You have given me an opportunity to write you a second computer generated
letter, again in regard to my contribution to the Northern California
Presbyterian Homes, Pooled Income Fund, account ITF 06487 0.
The recent check, which was most welcome, listed the old
erroneous figure for my contribution and not the corected figure, based on
a per share value of $\$$94.00, that you quoted to me in your letter of
March 21, 1983.
In all probability, the figure on the check resulted from a failure to
change the data that get typed on the checks and it did not reveal a
real error in the value used for computing the size of my share of the
fund's earnings.
I thought that it might be worth a letter to you, just to make sure.

Thank you for your acknowledgement of my registration for the JICAI.
I have been informed by Professor Alan Bundy that the organizing

Not having heard from you to the contrary, I am assuming that my daughters

This is in reply to your letter of 7 June 1983, which has just arrived, in
regard for the reservations that you are holding for me at the Parkhotel
in connection with the IJCAI, your account number 0012.
Not having heard from you by June 14th, which I assumed was a reasonable
length of time, I phoned the Parkhotel directly and I was told that no
reservations had been made for me, so I proceded to make my own arrangements
directly with the hotel. I can only assume that the rooms that you
are holding for me are not being held in my name. In any event, I will
no longer need your duplicate reservation.
Please accept my apology for any inconvenience that this may have caused
you and also please make sure that nothing is done to invalidate the
reservations that I have made directly with the hotel.
For your information, I am now holding reservations for a single room for
4 nights, arrival on August 8th and leaving on August 12th, and for a
double room for 6 nights, arrival on August 6th and also leaving on August

{\noindent Dear Mr. Siekmann:}
I am returning the reservation form for IJCAI-83 together with a check for
$\$$185 to cover my reservation for the conference and for three
reservations for the Tuesday evening Culinary Journey.
The reservation form does not seem to make any provision for family
members who would like to attend the opening reception on Monday evening.
Two members of my family would like to attend this affair, when, I believe,
the 1983 Distinguished Service Award is to be presented to me. Would you
please advise me on this matter.

The \TEX\ system, now known as
\TEX82, is copyrighted but it is made freely available to users at the
nominal reproduction costs. The program on magnetic tape and some printed
documentation may be ordered from an approved outside supplier.
I am enclosing an order form for your use. I am also enclosing a sheet
containing some \TEX82 Installation Notes. This latter is now rather out
of date, but it will give you an idea of the work that is involved in
installing \TEX82 on your system. Not mentioned on either sheet is the
fact that Professor Knuth has recently written a users manual to appear in
book form under the title ``The \TEX book''.
In replt to your specific question regarding ``The \WEB\ System of

In reply to your letter of March 25, 1983. the \TEX\ system, now known as

I am enclosing an order form for your use. I am also enclosing a sheet

In answer to your specific questions, \TEX82 has been or is currently
being installed on a number of TOPS10 and VAX(VMS) systems and it is
currently being used with many different kinds of printers. As mentioned
in the Installation Notes, change files are needed for different operating
systems and different drivers are needed for the various printers. By
now, there is a fairly lively exchange of information going on among
\TEX82 users and you should not have any trouble in locating a driver
program for almost any printer that you might want to use.
